A light-sensitizing medication is applied to abnormal, sun-damaged patches of skin, and the lesions are also scraped or debrided as part of the same visit before a special light source is used to activate the medication and destroy the treated cells. This approach targets areas of skin with early, precancerous changes before they can progress further. It's a non-surgical way to treat these patches without cutting into the skin, though the surface of the lesion is prepared with light scraping.
