A test in which a very fine needle electrode is placed into muscles of one arm or one leg to record their electrical activity, both at rest and while the muscle is tensed. The pattern of signals shows whether weakness, cramping, or numbness comes from the nerve supplying the muscle or from the muscle itself. Muscles alongside the spine in that same region may be sampled during the study.
