A doctor inserts thin electrodes through the skin of the face, just below the cheekbone, so they come to rest near the base of the skull close to the inner part of the temporal lobe. These pick up electrical activity from deep brain regions that electrodes on the scalp cannot capture well. It is used mainly when evaluating seizures, to help work out where they begin.
