This test records the brain's electrical activity during sleep or in a patient who is comatose, rather than during ordinary wakefulness. Certain abnormal patterns, including those linked to seizures, can show up more clearly in these states than while a person is awake and alert. Electrodes are placed on the scalp to pick up the brain's electrical signals throughout the recording.
