This test records the brain's electrical activity using scalp electrodes over a longer period than a routine EEG, increasing the chance of capturing abnormal patterns, such as those linked to seizures, that might not appear during a brief recording. The extended recording time allows the patient to pass through more of a natural sleep-wake cycle while brain activity is continuously tracked. It falls between a standard-length EEG and a more prolonged, multi-hour or overnight monitoring study.
