A breathing test carried out on an infant or very young child using specialized equipment that measures how much air the lungs hold, including how much is left in the chest at the end of a normal breath out. Because a small child cannot follow breathing instructions, the technique is adapted so the measurements can be made while the child rests quietly. It is used to assess conditions such as long-term lung disease of prematurity, persistent wheeze, or cystic fibrosis.
