An ultrasound probe held against the skull listens to blood flowing through the arteries inside the head and picks up tiny bubbles or clot fragments passing through. A small amount of agitated saline is injected into an arm vein first so that bubbles can be tracked as they travel. It is often used to look for a passage in the heart or lungs that lets blood bypass the lung filter, one possible cause of stroke in younger people.
