A thin, flexible tube is threaded through a vein in the neck, chest or groin and carried by the blood flow into the right side of the heart and on into the artery leading to the lungs. Once in position it measures pressures inside the heart and lungs and how much blood the heart is pumping, which guides treatment in seriously ill patients.
