Transesophageal Echo for Ongoing Monitoring

Vermont rates for HCPCS 93318

An ultrasound of the heart taken from inside the food pipe with a probe passed down the throat, kept in place so the heart can be watched continuously. Because the probe sits directly behind the heart the pictures are very clear, and they are read as they happen so treatment can be adjusted immediately. It is used during surgery or in critical care rather than as a one-off diagnostic study.
