An ultrasound of the heart taken from inside the food pipe with a probe passed down the throat, performed specifically to assess a heart defect present from birth. Because the probe sits directly behind the heart it gives a clear view of holes, valve problems and abnormal connections that are hard to see from the chest wall. It covers placing the probe, taking the images, and reporting the findings.
