Ergonovine Provocation Test for Artery Spasm

A test in which a medicine called ergonovine is given in small doses while the heart is closely watched, to see whether it triggers a spasm, a sudden tightening, in a heart artery. Chest pain, changes in the heart tracing, or narrowing seen during the test point to spasm as the cause of the symptoms. A medicine to relieve the spasm is given as soon as the response appears.
