A controlled electrical shock is delivered to the chest from outside the body to reset the heart back into a normal rhythm. It is used for certain fast or irregular heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation, when medication alone hasn't restored a normal rhythm. The patient is typically sedated briefly so the procedure isn't felt.
