In this test, a thin, flexible scope is passed gently through the nose and positioned above the voice box to directly watch a person swallow food or liquid, sometimes with dye added to make it easier to see. It shows whether food or liquid is entering the airway or remaining in the throat after a swallow, and the images can be recorded for later review. It does not use X-rays or radiation.
