A very fine needle electrode is placed into one or more of the muscles that move the eye, and the electrical activity of those muscles is recorded while the eye moves in different directions. A specialist then reviews the tracings and writes a report. It is used to work out why an eye does not move properly, for example whether the muscle itself, the nerve supplying it, or scarring is responsible.
