A pill-sized camera is swallowed and takes a rapid series of pictures as it passes down the food pipe. The images are sent to a recorder worn on the body and reviewed afterwards to examine the lining of the esophagus, for example for enlarged veins or inflammation. The capsule then passes out naturally in a bowel movement.
