The hepatitis B vaccine prepared for adults with an added ingredient that strengthens the immune response, given as an injection into the muscle of the upper arm. Hepatitis B is a virus that attacks the liver and can cause long-term liver damage, and the vaccine trains the immune system to fight it off. The short course completes the series in fewer doses than the standard adult vaccine, though some people, such as those on dialysis, are given a longer four-dose course.
