Computer-Assisted Tissue Stain Measurement

Nebraska rates for HCPCS 88361

A pathologist uses image-analysis software to measure how strongly a single special stain lit up in a tissue sample taken during a biopsy or surgery, such as a hormone-receptor or growth-protein marker used to guide cancer treatment. The computer assistance gives a more precise, repeatable score than reading the slide by eye alone. It is typically done after a tumor sample has already been stained, to help decide which therapies are likely to work.
