Fungal Culture Of Skin, Hair Or Nail

New Mexico rates for HCPCS 87101

A scraping or clipping of skin, hair or nail is placed on a growth medium in the laboratory to see whether a fungus grows, and anything that grows is given a preliminary identification. It is used to confirm conditions such as ringworm, athlete's foot or a fungal nail infection before treatment is started. Fungi grow slowly, so results take longer than a bacterial culture.
