Irradiation of a Blood Product Before Transfusion

North Dakota rates for HCPCS 86945

This process treats a unit of donated blood or a blood product with radiation before it is given to a patient. Irradiation inactivates white blood cells in the donated blood, preventing a rare but serious complication where the donor's immune cells attack the recipient's body.
