A laboratory crossmatch in which a potential donor's cells are mixed with the recipient's serum and a substance is added that destroys cells only where antibodies have attached. A technician then reads under a microscope how many cells were killed. It is done before a transplant to show whether the recipient carries antibodies that would attack the donor organ.
