A blood test that looks for antibodies to HTLV type II, a virus that infects certain white blood cells and stays in the body for life once it is caught. It passes on through blood, through sexual contact, and from mother to baby mainly in breast milk. Most people who carry it stay well, though a small number develop a slowly worsening condition of the spinal cord and nerves many years later.
