This is a highly sensitive blood test that measures a protein fragment produced when a blood clot breaks down. An elevated result can suggest the presence of a blood clot somewhere in the body, such as in a deep leg vein or the lungs, though it does not show exactly where. Because of its high sensitivity, this version is often used specifically to help rule out a clot when the suspicion is low, since a normal result makes a clot unlikely.
