Fibrin-Stabilizing Factor (XIII) Solubility Screen

Hawaii rates for HCPCS 85291

Screens for a shortage of the clotting protein that stabilizes fibrin, the mesh holding a blood clot together, known as factor XIII. A clot formed from the blood sample is placed in a solution and watched: a clot that dissolves points to a deficiency, while a clot that holds together does not. The answer is yes-or-no rather than a measured level or activity figure.
