A test for infection with Helicobacter pylori, the bacterium that can live in the lining of the stomach and cause ulcers and indigestion. The patient swallows a harmless labeled substance, and a sample taken afterwards is analyzed for the chemical change the bacterium produces, which shows whether the infection is active now.
