A blood test that measures how tightly the hemoglobin in a person's red cells holds on to oxygen, reported as the oxygen level at which half of it is carrying oxygen. An unusually tight or loose grip points to an inherited difference in hemoglobin, which can explain an unexplained high or low red cell count.
