This blood test measures dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a hormone made mainly by the adrenal glands that the body uses as a building block for other hormones such as testosterone and estrogen. It is used to help evaluate conditions involving excess or insufficient adrenal hormone production, unusual hair growth or acne patterns, or delayed or early puberty. Levels naturally vary with age.
