Measures carnitine, a substance the body uses to carry fats into cells so they can be burned for energy, reporting both the total amount and the freely available portion. Low levels can cause muscle weakness, low blood sugar, and heart or liver problems. It is used to look for inherited disorders of fat handling and for deficiency in people on dialysis or long-term nutrition support.
