Measures how much ethanol — drinking alcohol — is present in a sample of blood or another body fluid. Urine and breath samples are not covered here; those are tested by different methods. It is used clinically to confirm alcohol as a cause of symptoms such as confusion, to gauge how intoxicated someone is, or as part of assessing liver problems or withdrawal.
