A genetic test that checks whether a section of the PMP22 gene is present in an extra copy or missing altogether. An extra copy causes the most common inherited nerve disorder, which brings gradual weakness and numbness in the feet and hands; a missing copy causes a related condition in which nerves are easily damaged by pressure. A blood sample is used.
