Maple Syrup Urine Disease Gene Test

Vermont rates for HCPCS 81205

A genetic test that looks for the common inherited changes in a gene needed to break down certain protein building blocks. Faults in it cause maple syrup urine disease, in which those building blocks build up and can make a baby seriously ill within days of birth; the name comes from the sweet smell of the urine. Only the frequently seen changes are checked, not the whole gene.
