Nuclear Scan of a Brain Fluid Shunt

Washington rates for HCPCS 78645

A scan that checks whether a shunt, the tube implanted to drain excess fluid away from the brain, is working. A small amount of radioactive tracer is injected into the shunt's reservoir under the scalp and a camera follows it to see whether it travels freely along the tube to where it drains. Slow or absent movement points to a blockage.
