A nuclear medicine scan that uses a small dose of radioactive tracer which gathers in areas of heart muscle that are damaged or hold abnormal deposits. A camera rotates around the chest to build cross-sectional images, so the affected areas can be located and their extent judged. It differs from a stress test, which looks at blood flow to the muscle rather than the muscle itself.
