Blood Volume Measurement

South Dakota rates for HCPCS 78122

A measurement of the total amount of blood in the body. A small measured dose of a labeled tracer is injected, blood samples are drawn once it has mixed, and the dilution is used to work out the plasma volume and the red cell volume separately, which together give the whole blood volume. It is used when it is unclear whether an abnormal blood count reflects a real change in cells or only in fluid.
