A measurement of the volume of plasma, the liquid part of the blood, using a small measured dose of a labeled tracer injected into a vein. Several blood samples are drawn at intervals afterwards and the dilution across them is used to calculate the volume. Taking more than one sample corrects for tracer that leaks out of the circulation over time.
