The colon is filled with a barium contrast liquid and then air, and a series of X-ray images is taken as the patient is repositioned, coating the lining of the colon so its inner surface shows up in detail. This two-part (double-contrast) technique is used to look for polyps, tumors, or other abnormalities along the colon.
