An MRI of the brain that maps which areas activate during activity, performed while a physician or psychologist personally administers the testing during the scan. The clinician chooses the tasks, judges whether the patient is performing them correctly, and adapts them as the session goes, which is needed for complex mapping such as language. It is used before brain surgery to locate areas that must be protected.
