An MRI of the brain that maps which areas switch on during activity, taken while the patient performs simple set tasks such as moving a hand or watching a visual pattern. It is used before brain surgery to locate the areas that control movement, vision or language so they can be protected. The tasks are selected and run by the imaging staff as part of the scan.
