Places, or replaces, a hearing device that is implanted in the bone behind the ear and works by sending sound through the skull as vibration directly to the inner ear. This bypasses the ear canal and middle ear, which is useful when those parts are blocked, malformed or damaged and an ordinary hearing aid cannot deliver sound effectively. The operation is done under anesthesia through an incision behind the ear.
