This procedure widens the eustachian tube, the narrow passage that connects the back of the nose to the middle ear and normally helps equalize pressure and drain fluid. A thin scope is passed through the nostril to reach the opening of the tube, where a small balloon is inflated briefly to stretch it open, then removed. It treats one side and is used when the tube has become narrowed or blocked, causing pressure, fullness, or fluid buildup in the ear.
