Surgery that reaches into the eye socket through an incision in the eyelid crease or through the lining inside the lid, without lifting a flap of skull bone, and removes part of the bony wall of the socket. Taking out that bone gives the crowded contents of the socket somewhere to expand, easing pressure on the eye and the optic nerve. It is used when swollen tissue behind the eye is pushing the eye forward or threatening sight.
