A treatment applied to the retina, the light-sensing layer at the back of the eye, in a very young infant with a serious, progressing retinal condition such as retinopathy of prematurity. It uses a laser or a freezing technique to stop abnormal blood vessel growth and reduce the risk of vision loss or retinal detachment. It is generally performed under anesthesia given the patient's young age.
