A clinician uses a freezing probe applied to the outside of the eye to seal a weak spot, tear, or thin area in the retina before it can progress to a full retinal detachment. It does not involve draining any fluid from behind the retina. This preventive treatment is used when a retinal problem is caught early enough to head off a more serious detachment.
