Removes the natural lens of the eye by breaking it into fragments with an ultrasonic probe and suctioning the pieces out through a small opening. It clears a cloudy or damaged lens so light can reach the back of the eye again. Fitting a replacement lens implant, where one is used, is handled as a separate step.
