Replacement of the whole thickness of a clouded or scarred cornea — the clear dome at the front of the eye — with donor tissue, in an eye whose natural lens has been removed and not replaced. The diseased disc of cornea is cut out and a donor disc is stitched into its place. Vision improves gradually over months as the graft settles and stitches come out.
