Strips the fine sympathetic nerve fibers off the surface of the arterial arch in the palm, the curved vessel that feeds blood out to all the fingers. Those fibers hold the artery clamped down, so removing them lets the vessel relax and open, improving blood supply to the hand. It is used for severely restricted circulation causing pain, cold intolerance or non-healing sores, as in advanced Raynaud's phenomenon or scleroderma.
