Takes a small piece of a nerve so it can be examined under a microscope. The surgeon makes a small incision over an accessible nerve, usually near the ankle, and removes a short segment or a few fibers. It is used to find the cause of unexplained numbness, weakness, or burning pain when other tests have not given an answer.
