Cutting of the Greater Occipital Nerve

Vermont rates for HCPCS 64744

This procedure cuts or removes a segment of the greater occipital nerve, which runs from the back of the skull up into the scalp, to relieve chronic pain in that area when other treatments have not worked. It is used for persistent occipital neuralgia, a condition causing sharp or throbbing pain at the base of the skull and scalp. Because the nerve is cut, the area it serves may become permanently numb.
