Deliberately destroys the celiac plexus — a bundle of nerves deep in the upper abdomen that carries pain signals from the pancreas, stomach, and neighbouring organs — by injecting a nerve-destroying agent such as alcohol or phenol into it. Imaging may be used to guide the needle to the right spot. It is used for severe, persistent upper abdominal pain, most often from pancreatic cancer or long-standing pancreatitis.
