Places a breathing-triggered stimulator that treats obstructive sleep apnea. Through incisions in the neck and chest, an electrode is placed on the nerve that controls tongue movement, a sensor that detects breathing effort is positioned, and a small pulse generator is implanted under the skin. During sleep the device gently stimulates the tongue forward so the airway stays open.
