Major spine surgery that removes part or all of a vertebral body, the block-shaped front section of a backbone, in order to reach and take out an abnormal growth pressing on the spinal cord. Taking the bone away both exposes the growth and relieves pressure on the cord and nerve roots. The spine normally has to be rebuilt and supported afterward so it stays stable.
